From the Apostle's Pen

Well-being is the Promised Reward of Parental Honor

By Apostle Joseph Hobbs, Th.D.
Deut 5:16

Deut 5:16 Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. (KJV)

"In 1909, Mrs. James Bruce Dodd thought of her father as she listened to a Mother's Day sermon in Spokane, Washington. She felt the need for a similar day to honor fathers, so she initiated the process. The mayor set aside the third Sunday in June as "Father's Day." The governor of Washington then made a statewide proclamation to celebrate fatherhood. In 1972, President Nixon made it permanent by signing a congressional resolution which called for the official recognition of Father's Day.- Brian's Lines, May/June 1994

Greetings to each of you my heavenly Father's children. I am sure that you are aware by now that I am away on assignment, however my thoughts and prayers are with you on this very special day in which we honor fathers for their contribution to our lives. I would like to personally wish every father and father-to-be a very happy and blessed Father's Day!

I believe that fathers who have attempted to model Christian values and principles before not only their children but before the community and the world are worthy of special honor. I believe that as a nation we spend too much of our time reporting on the errors within humanity and not enough time encouraging the kind of behavior that we believe would raise the standard of godliness amongst us.

The Word of God promises to reward the person who honors their parents with well-being and longevity. The degree of respect that is due to our parents is both taught and modeled. Children learn not only what we teach them by precept they learn more by the example of our behavior toward the elders who are among us.

Senior men are often left to languish and fade off the scene when their wage-earning days have ended. However, this is the very time when we could learn from their accumulated wisdom. We need to honor the senior men who sit as elders at the gate. Happy Father's Day!
