Faith is Singular Confidence in God

By Apostle Joseph Hobbs, Th.D.
James 1:5-7

James 1:5-7

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord (NIV)

"The Latin word for doubt, dubitare, comes from an Aryan root meaning 'two.' To believe is to be 'in one mind' about accepting something as true; to disbelieve is to be 'in one mind' about rejecting it. To doubt is to waver between the two, to believe and doubt at once, and so to be 'in two minds." - Os Guinness

Beloved, God is calling us to single-minded confidence in His ability to provide for all of our needs. This requires that we accept as fact the Word of God concerning His provision for His children. It is not only believing that God can provide for our needs that are important but it is also having such an assurance that I do not allow the present circumstances and/or situations of life to deter me from what I believe to be true.

God knowing that we would have times of difficulty in our lives has made provision for every eventuality. There are times when as believers we seem to be riding high upon the crest of faith and ultimate fulfillment of the promises and blessings of God. On the other hand there are times when manifestation of the promises of God seems to be but a distant mirage within a dry parched desert. It is the midst of the latter circumstances that we need to fortify our faith through the Word of God.

I have noticed something interesting in the creation of the concrete used in the construction of the building going up near us. I have noticed that in order to reinforce the concrete their plans included placing iron bars in a mold and pouring the concrete over the bars. In other words the planning for reinforcing the concrete was a forethought and not an after thought. I believe that this applies to living a faith-filled life as well. I must reinforce my faith for future trials, temptations, and tests by daily studying and receiving as true the Word of God. The Word of God is the reinforcing agent used to stabilize my faith.

The Apostle Paul reminds us that our faith is rewarded continually by hearing, receiving and doing the Word of God. "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Rom 10:17 KJV). So what your faith really needs is a good dose of the Word.
